Stunt Training Cincinnati: How Parkour, Circus, and Performance Skills Work Together

If you are interested in stunt work, circus, theater, or other physical performance, it helps to train more than one discipline. Parkour can be a useful part of that mix because it builds practical ways to jump, land, climb, vault, fall, balance, and adapt to an unfamiliar obstacle.

That does not make parkour a substitute for stunt education, acting, stage combat, dance, or aerial instruction. Those disciplines teach their own craft: choreography, character, timing, apparatus technique, partner work, and how to perform for an audience. The overlap is where things get interesting. A performer with both a broad movement base and performance training has more options when a role, a set, or a piece of choreography asks for something physical.

At Swift Movement Studio in Cincinnati, we coach parkour and ground-based acrobatics. We also share our Mitchell Avenue facility with Elevated Aerials, which offers aerial classes for ages 12 and up. That gives local students a practical way to combine ground movement and aerial training without pretending they are the same thing.

What does parkour have to do with stunt work?

Parkour helps athletes learn to move through an environment with control. Training can include jumping, landing, rolling, vaulting, climbing, swinging, balancing, and ground acrobatics. It also asks athletes to assess an obstacle, choose a movement, and adjust when the situation changes.

Those are useful foundations for action-oriented performance. A stunt sequence might involve clearing a railing, moving through a set, climbing a structure, taking a controlled fall, or repeating a physical action from a specific camera angle. The exact situation will vary, so a performer benefits from having more than one familiar movement pattern.

Parkour is only one foundation. Professional stunt performers may also study martial arts, stage combat, acting, driving, wire work, high falls, swimming, weapons, rigging, choreography, and other specialized disciplines. They also need repeatability: being able to hit a mark, work safely with a team, and perform the same action consistently.

Parkour and circus arts: different strengths, useful overlap

Parkour and circus arts share plenty of physical territory. Both can develop coordination, strength, flexibility, acrobatics, spatial awareness, body control, and confidence. Their emphasis is different.

Parkour usually focuses on ground movement and the relationship between the athlete and an environment. Students spend time on jumping, landing, vaulting, climbing, navigating obstacles, and finding efficient ways through space.

Circus and aerial disciplines often go deeper into apparatus technique, choreography, lines, presentation, partner work, and performance quality. An aerialist may specialize in sling, lyra, trapeze, silks, or another apparatus. Those skills require focused instruction and progressive training.

Neither discipline replaces the other. An aerialist who develops comfortable, controlled ground movement may have more choices in a performance. A parkour athlete who studies aerial or circus arts can learn more about apparatus work, choreography, and presentation.

These are broad patterns, not a ranking of programs or performers. Individual training varies widely.

Aerial arts and parkour in the same Cincinnati facility

Elevated Aerials teaches aerial classes at Swift Movement Studio on West Mitchell Avenue in Cincinnati. Their instruction is dedicated to aerial arts; Swift’s work is parkour, acrobatics, fitness, and ground movement. Students who want to train both can do so in the same facility while keeping the instruction distinct.

That setup is especially helpful for someone building a varied physical practice. One week might include an aerial class focused on apparatus technique and a parkour class focused on landing mechanics, vaulting, and movement through space. The right balance depends on the person’s goals, experience, and the coaching available.

What training equipment can support physical performance?

Swift is a movement facility rather than a theater rehearsal room. Its spring floor, crash mats, soft equipment, parkour obstacles, and wall-based training areas let coaches introduce new movement progressively. Those tools can support tumbling, flips, controlled falls, jumps, vaults, climbing, air awareness, and obstacle interaction.

Equipment is not a shortcut around good coaching. The purpose of a soft landing surface or a progressive setup is to give an athlete room to learn a movement with appropriate supervision before asking for more speed, height, or complexity.

From parkour to professional performance

Parkour has led athletes into many kinds of performance, including live shows, theater, film, and stunt work. The path is rarely a straight line, and parkour alone is not a professional credential. It can be one useful piece of a larger practice.

Swift’s founder, Seth Rujiraviriyapinyo, began training parkour in 2011. Swift’s public team bio describes his competitive parkour background and work as a certified instructor. American Parkour has also recorded his competition results. Those experiences inform the way Swift approaches movement training: build the basics, progress deliberately, and keep learning.

There are visible examples of the wider connection between parkour and screen performance. Parkour athlete and stunt performer Jesse La Flair lists work as Nightcrawler’s stunt double in X-Men: Apocalypse and X-Men: Dark Phoenix, along with stunt credits in productions such as Captain Marvel and Red Notice. His career is a useful example of why athletic movement and performance skills can support each other, while still requiring the broader training and professionalism of stunt work. See La Flair’s listed credits.

Theater follows a similar pattern. Acting, text work, character, blocking, and audience connection remain central. Physical training can make an actor more comfortable with space, choreography, stage combat, and demanding movement. Actor Taha Mandviwala’s interviews about his training describe a path that included theater at the University of Kentucky and stage combat, illustrating how a performer can combine physical practice with acting craft. Read the interview.

Is parkour good training for actors?

Parkour can help actors develop coordination, spatial awareness, movement confidence, and a larger range of physical choices. It may be particularly useful for people interested in action, stage combat, musical theater, or physical theater.

It does not teach acting. Actors still need to study character, storytelling, text, voice, listening, and the specific demands of their medium. Parkour can strengthen the physical instrument an actor brings to that work.

Is parkour good training for stunt performers?

Parkour can be a strong physical foundation for stunt performers because it trains jumping, landing, climbing, falling, rolling, acrobatics, obstacle navigation, and decision-making in motion. It is most useful as part of a larger training plan.

Anyone pursuing a professional stunt career should add stunt-specific education and other specialties that fit their goals. That might include acting, martial arts, stage combat, driving, wire work, swimming, or work with established stunt professionals. Safety, set etiquette, and repeatable execution matter as much as athletic ability.

Is parkour useful for circus performers?

Yes, especially for circus performers who want more confidence and capability on the ground. Parkour can help with jumping, landing, ground acrobatics, obstacle navigation, and improvising with a space. Aerial and circus training can offer parkour athletes a different kind of challenge through apparatus work, choreography, and performance quality.

The best choice is not necessarily more training. It is training that fits the performer’s goals and leaves enough time for recovery, technical practice, and coaching.

Who should consider this kind of cross-training?

Parkour can make sense for aspiring stunt performers, actors interested in physical roles, circus and aerial performers who want a stronger ground vocabulary, and parkour athletes who want to explore performance. It can also be a useful starting point for kids who enjoy movement but have not decided whether their future interest is theater, climbing, dance, gymnastics, competition, or something else.

A child does not need to pick a career path at age 10. Learning to move with awareness and confidence can make it easier to try new activities later.

Looking for stunt training in Cincinnati?

Swift Movement Studio does not operate a professional stunt school. We teach parkour and acrobatic movement skills that can support a stunt-training foundation: jumping, landing, vaulting, climbing, falling, rolling, flips, obstacle navigation, and movement problem-solving.

If your goal is a professional stunt career, start by building sound movement fundamentals and plan to add specialized stunt and performance education over time. If you are looking for a coached place to begin, schedule a free orientation at Swift.

Looking for circus or aerial classes in Cincinnati?

For dedicated aerial instruction, visit Elevated Aerials. They offer aerial classes at Swift Movement Studio in Cincinnati. Students interested in both aerial arts and parkour can explore each discipline with the instructors who specialize in it.

Frequently asked questions

Can parkour help you become a stunt performer?

Parkour develops abilities used in many action sequences, including jumping, landing, climbing, falling, acrobatics, and obstacle navigation. Professional stunt performers generally combine it with other specialties and stunt-specific training.

Are there stunt classes in Cincinnati?

Swift teaches parkour and acrobatic movement skills that can support stunt preparation, but it is not a professional stunt school. Students pursuing stunt careers should add specialized stunt and performance training as they progress.

Where can I take circus classes in Cincinnati?

Elevated Aerials offers aerial classes at Swift Movement Studio in Cincinnati. Their program is separate from Swift’s parkour and ground-movement instruction.

What is the difference between parkour and circus?

Parkour focuses on adapting movement to obstacles and environments. Circus disciplines often concentrate more heavily on apparatus technique, choreography, and performance. The disciplines overlap in strength, acrobatics, coordination, and body awareness.

Is parkour used in movies?

Yes. Parkour athletes have worked in film and television as performers, stunt professionals, and movement specialists. Jesse La Flair, for example, has stunt credits that include doubling Nightcrawler in two X-Men films. His public stunt profile lists those credits.

Start with the movement you want to build

Whether you are interested in parkour for its own sake or as part of a larger performance practice, start with a class that matches your current experience. At Swift, beginners can learn movement skills through coached progressions in a supportive setting. Schedule your free orientation to find the right place to begin.

If your child watches American Ninja Warrior and turns the furniture or playground into an obstacle course, you may be looking for Ninja Warrior classes in Cincinnati. Parkour teaches many of the same skills: jumping, climbing, swinging, balance, and the confidence to work through a physical challenge.

Parkour and Ninja Warrior are closely related, but they train for different goals. Ninja training prepares athletes to complete a defined course of specialized obstacles. Parkour builds a broad movement foundation that helps athletes handle new obstacles and environments. Families can choose either path, or combine them.

Parkour vs. Ninja Warrior at a glance

Parkour

Ninja Warrior

Goal: Adapt movement to the obstacle or environment in front of you.

Goal: Complete a defined obstacle course efficiently.

Training: Jumping, landing, vaulting, climbing, swinging, balance, and route choices.

Training: Course skills, hanging, grip endurance, transitions, balance, and pacing.

Environment: A gym, playground, park, or another appropriate training space.

Environment: Purpose-built Ninja obstacles and competition-style courses.

Transfer: The same movement problem can appear in many different forms.

Transfer: Direct practice on the obstacles and formats used in Ninja competition.

What is parkour?

Parkour is the practice of moving through obstacles by adapting your body to the environment. Parkour UK describes each obstacle or training spot as a distinct puzzle that asks for physical and mental engagement. A student might learn a precision jump in the gym, then recognize the same movement problem between playground platforms, stepping stones, or a fallen tree.

That process builds a useful movement vocabulary: running, jumping, controlled landings, vaults, climbing, swinging, balance, crawling, and safe descents. Good coaching does not ask kids to take reckless risks. It gives them progressions, time to assess a challenge, and room to build confidence gradually.

What is Ninja Warrior training?

Ninja Warrior training is obstacle-course training inspired by the Japanese SASUKE format and popularized in the United States by American Ninja Warrior. Athletes learn to move through a predetermined sequence of obstacles, often under a time limit.

Ninja courses use more than upper-body obstacles. The Federation of International Ninja Athletics includes agility, balance, aerial, upper-body, and ascension obstacles in its classification. Competitive Ninja also places a larger emphasis on hanging, grip endurance, unusual holds, and efficient transitions between specialized obstacles.

Why parkour transfers well to Ninja Warrior

Jumping and landing

Ninja courses ask athletes to jump between obstacles and stay in control for the next movement. Parkour training gives equal attention to where the feet land, how the body absorbs force, and how to keep momentum under control.

Walls, swinging, and lache skills

Parkour athletes work on wall runs, climb-ups, cat hangs, swings, and laches. The equipment may differ from a Warped Wall, rings, or a Salmon Ladder, but timing, body position, momentum, and distance judgment carry over.

Spatial awareness and problem solving

Parkour asks athletes to estimate distance, height, speed, and their body position, then make a safe plan. That experience can help when a Ninja athlete meets an obstacle they have not practiced in the same exact setup.

Parkour has a real Ninja Warrior track record

The crossover is easy to see in elite competition. ITV reported that parkour athlete Tim Champion became the first Ninja Warrior UK winner in 2019 after completing the final rope climb with one second remaining. ITV’s Elite Ninja profiles also describe Joe Scandrett as having a parkour background, with parkour as his main training activity and cardio and grip strength added for Ninja preparation.

That is a useful model for athletes who want to compete seriously: build broad movement skill, then add the obstacle-specific work the sport requires.

Where Ninja-specific training has the advantage

Dedicated Ninja training is the better fit for an athlete whose main goal is Ninja competition. It gives them time on the exact skills that are difficult to reproduce elsewhere: Salmon Ladder technique, cliffhanger-style grips, moving implements, hanging endurance, course transitions, and competition pacing.

Parkour alone does not automatically prepare someone for high-level Ninja competition. Serious competitors will benefit from grip work, pulling strength, climbing, upper-body endurance, and practice on Ninja obstacles.

Which is right for your child?

Consider Ninja Warrior training if your child:

Wants to compete on Ninja-style courses.

Loves hanging obstacles and recognizable Ninja challenges.

Wants focused practice on specialized equipment.

Consider parkour if your child:

Climbs, jumps, and explores every obstacle they find.

Enjoys finding their own way through a movement challenge.

Wants to build jumping, landing, vaulting, climbing, swinging, and balance skills.

Would enjoy skills that apply beyond one course layout.

Consider both if your child loves movement.

There is plenty of crossover. Parkour can build a broad foundation, while Ninja training can add specialization for athletes who want to compete.

Looking for Ninja Warrior training in Cincinnati?

Swift Movement is a parkour gym in Cincinnati, not a dedicated American Ninja Warrior competition gym. We teach the movement skills many families are looking for when they search for Ninja Warrior classes: jumping, landing, vaulting, climbing, swinging, balance, obstacle navigation, and problem solving.

Our classes use progressive challenges that meet students at their age and experience level. If your child loves obstacle courses and wants a broad movement foundation, try a beginner parkour class in Cincinnati.

Frequently asked questions

Is parkour the same as Ninja Warrior?

No. Both involve obstacles, but parkour emphasizes adapting movement to different environments. Ninja Warrior centers on completing purpose-built obstacle courses.

Is parkour good training for Ninja Warrior?

Yes. Parkour develops jumping, climbing, swinging, balance, spatial awareness, and obstacle problem solving that can transfer well to Ninja Warrior. Serious competitors also need Ninja-specific obstacle practice and grip training.

Does parkour build upper-body strength?

Climbing, swinging, hanging, and vaulting can develop upper-body strength. Competitive Ninja athletes often add specialized grip and pulling work because advanced Ninja obstacles demand it.

Are there Ninja Warrior classes in Cincinnati?

Cincinnati has Ninja obstacle programs and parkour training. Swift Movement offers parkour classes for children, teens, and adults who want to develop broad obstacle-navigation and movement skills.

Can parkour help my child compete in Ninja Warrior later?

Parkour can provide a strong movement foundation. High-level Ninja competition also requires practice on specialized obstacles, grip strength, and upper-body endurance.

If you or your athlete just started training at Swift Movement, one of the first practical questions is what shoes to wear for class.

You do not need the most expensive shoe on the market, but you do want something that grips well, helps you move naturally, and can hold up to regular training. When members ask what we recommend, we usually point them toward shoes with good grip, a simple sole, and enough durability to handle real use.

Here is what to look for, what to avoid, and a few specific models we often mention to beginners.

What matters most in a parkour shoe?

When someone is choosing a first pair of parkour shoes, we usually focus on three things: grip, thickness, and durability.

1. Grip

Grip matters because parkour involves jumping, landing, balancing, and pushing off surfaces with control. A good parkour shoe should have a single-piece rubber sole.

That is important for two reasons:

Better traction. A single rubber sole tends to grip better on the kinds of surfaces parkour athletes train on.

Better durability. Chunky soles with separate lugs can peel, rip, or wear unevenly.

We generally tell members to avoid foam-heavy soles. Foam can feel comfortable at first, but it is often slicker than rubber and does not perform as well when you need stable contact with a surface.

2. Thickness and ground feel

This part is partly personal preference, but we usually recommend thinner shoes for parkour beginners.

Why? Thinner shoes give athletes more tactile feedback. In simple terms, you can feel the ground and the surface underneath you better. That often helps build cleaner foot placement and better movement habits over time.

That does not mean every athlete needs the most minimal shoe possible on day one. Some people prefer a little more cushion. The main goal is to avoid shoes with a big, elevated heel or a bulky sole that disconnects you from the ground.

3. Durability

Parkour can be hard on shoes. Training includes repeated landings, friction on walls and rails, and lots of quick starts and stops.

That is why durability matters just as much as comfort. Sometimes a cheaper shoe looks like a great deal, but if it wears out quickly, it may not really save money. It is worth thinking about price and durability together.

What shoes should you avoid for parkour?

A lot of regular athletic shoes are not built with parkour in mind. Here are a few things we usually recommend avoiding:

Shoes with chunky tread that can rip off or wear unevenly

Shoes with mostly foam on the bottom

Shoes with a tall, elevated heel

Shoes that feel overly bulky or disconnected from the ground

There are plenty of shoes that can work well for parkour, even if they are not made specifically for it. The key is to look for a simple rubber sole and a shape that supports natural movement.

Swift’s beginner-friendly parkour shoe picks

These are not the only shoes that can work, but they are a few models we often mention when members ask where to start.

At Swift Movement, we believe parkour should be about movement, not money. Our Scholarship Program exists to make sure committed students can keep training when finances get tight, without compromising the quality, culture, or coaching that define Swift.

This program is for both current members and families considering Swift who want to understand how we support access in a thoughtful, sustainable way.

Parkour’s Roots: Built for Access

Parkour did not start in polished gyms or elite training centers.

It began in the working-class suburbs of France, where young people used walls, rails, stairs, and open space as their training ground. No equipment. No membership. Just movement, creativity, and persistence.

That history matters.

One of the most beautiful things about parkour is that, at its core, you don’t need anything. Just your body, your environment, and the willingness to try. While modern gyms like Swift provide coaching, safety, and progression, the spirit of parkour has always been about access and self-improvement, not exclusivity.

Our scholarship program is one way we honor those roots while operating responsibly as a professional facility.

What the Swift Scholarship Is

The Swift Scholarship Program is a limited, mission-aligned fund that provides partial tuition assistance to dedicated parkour students.

Key details:

We set aside up to 5% of our monthly revenue specifically for scholarships

Scholarships cover 25% or 50% off core parkour memberships

Open Gym is always included

Workshop discounts match the scholarship percentage

This is not a promotional discount. It is a deliberate investment in students who show up, care, and contribute to the community.

Who the Scholarship Is For

The Swift Scholarship is designed for students who are a strong fit for our community and would benefit from support. Selection is based on a mix of financial need and/or training commitment—and in some cases, students may qualify primarily because of one or the other.

1. It blends the body control of gymnastics and the focus of martial arts but usually with less rigidity and structure, which can be a better fit for neurodivergent learners who benefit from autonomy and choice.

What Is Parkour

Parkour is the art of moving efficiently through space using skills like jumping, vaulting, climbing, and balancing. In a gym setting such as Swift Movement Studio, kids learn on padded obstacles with professional coaching and clear progressions. Classes emphasize:

Self-guided exploration. Children select challenges that feel just-right, then scale difficulty as they gain confidence.

Creativity. Students piece together short movement flows, discovering their own solutions to obstacles.

Non-competition. Progress is measured personally rather than by scores or trophies.

This framework mirrors helpful elements of gymnastics and martial arts while leaving more room for choice and play.

Common ADHD Hurdles in Traditional Activities

Short attention spans. Long lectures or repetitive drills can quickly lose a child’s interest.

Impulse control. Quick reactions may lead to unsafe choices if energy is not channeled well.

Structured environments. Team sports often involve long waits, complex rules, and heavy comparison to peers.

Social pressure. Head to head competition can create anxiety or shutdowns.

Why Parkour Fits ADHD Brains

Self regulation through movement

Parkour gives kids permission to move often. Instead of asking them to sit still, we teach them how to move with focus. Breathing cues, quiet landings, and safe fall practice build interoception (the brain’s ability to notice and interpret signals from inside the body) and body awareness. Over time, students learn to ramp up for powerful jumps and calm down for balance lines, a practical form of self regulation.

Instant feedback and achievable goals

Every rep delivers information. Did the feet land on the line? Was the landing quiet? Coaches set micro goals like stick three precision jumps or hold a two second balance. These short feedback loops create frequent wins that sustain attention and motivation.

Autonomy and creative decision making

Routes are puzzles. Students decide foot placement, choose a vault, and experiment with different paths. That autonomy is reinforcing for ADHD learners who thrive when they feel ownership. More ownership usually means more focus and persistence.

Low pressure social engagement

Parkour communities are collaborative rather than adversarial. Kids take turns, share tips, and cheer for each other. The environment feels like a team without the stress of direct competition, which reduces performance anxiety and helps friendships form naturally.

Psychological and Physiological Upsides

Executive function and working memory

Parkour blends physical exertion with cognitive demand. Kids must plan a route, inhibit impulses, and adjust in real time as obstacles change. Families often report better follow through on directions and smoother transitions after class. Research on exercise and ADHD aligns with these observations and notes improvements in inhibitory control, working memory, and cognitive flexibility.

Attention and dopamine

Movement can increase the availability of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and norepinephrine that support attention and motivation. While parkour is not a medical treatment, it can meaningfully complement behavioral strategies and medications similar to yoga, tai chi, or other movement practices.

Resilience through failure and repetition

Parkour culture treats mistakes as data. If a jump is short, we narrow the gap and try again. If balance wobbles, we slow down and reset. Students internalize that progress comes from iteration. This mindset transfers to schoolwork, chores, and relationships.

Why Many Neurodivergent Kids Feel at Home in Parkour

Parkour has a reputation as a bit of an anti sport culture. There is no scoreboard, no referee, and less emphasis on uniformity. That attracts many neurodivergent people who want movement, creativity, and community without the pressure of strict conformity. At Swift Movement Studio, our coaches are skilled at being patient and supportive, and we serve a large number of kids with ADHD. We consistently hear positive feedback from families about how the coaching style, pacing, and environment help their children thrive.

How Parkour Compares to Other ADHD Friendly Sports

Guides for parents commonly recommend martial arts and gymnastics for ADHD because these activities reward focus, self discipline, and body control. Parkour sits in a sweet spot between them:

Like gymnastics, it builds strength, flexibility, balance, and spatial awareness.

Like martial arts, it develops respect, self control, and ritualized movement patterns.

Key difference: parkour typically offers less rigidity in drills and structure. That flexibility gives ADHD learners more chances to choose their challenge, reset quickly, and iterate without fear of doing it wrong. For many families, that is the unlock.

What Parents Should Look For in ADHD-Friendly Activities

Progressions. Ask how skills are scaled for different levels and how kids advance.

Class flow. Children should be moving often with short, clear instruction sets

Low student : coach ratio: This ensures your kid gets the attention they need. At Swift, we maintain a target of 1:8, with a cap at 1:12 in our classes.

Coaching style. Listen for praise tied to effort, problem solving, and safe risk taking. Importantly not just results!

Safety. Padded surfaces, trained staff, and fall training are essential.

Safety isn’t being careful, it’s learning your limits and mindset to protect yourself.

Focused on control and technique before scale or flash

A Class at Swift Looks Like This

Warm up with purpose. Games, joint prep, and landing mechanics to wake up brain and body.

Skill stations. Short Instructed blocks for jumping, vaulting, climbing, and balance. Students pick level appropriate goals.

Activity/Course time. Kids link two or three skills into a route, experimenting with rhythm and creativity.

Game Time. An instructor-led game or to encourage utilizing the skills and creating a positive experience.

Cooldown and reflection. We ask, what worked and what will you try next time.

Try It Out

If you are exploring parkour for ADHD kids or looking for movement for hyperactive children, we would love to meet your family. It can also be turned into a Two-handed vault by placing the outside hand next to the inside hand on the obstacle.

Technique:

Run toward the obstacle

Launch off of the leg on the same side as the hand placed on the obstacle,

Brush hand on object just enough to launch yourself forward over the obstacle,

Come out in one-footed run, landing on the leg you used to launch over.

When I first started parkour, I was glued to YouTube, binge-watching every tutorial I could find and trying to piece together my own progression. I spent hours imitating advanced moves, unaware that I was skipping crucial foundational skills and strength elements that would have made those techniques safer and easier to learn. Looking back, I wish I had a clear guide to show me where to begin and how to build up step by step.

That’s exactly why we created the level band system at Swift Movement Studio—a roadmap designed to remove the guesswork from progression, helping students build a solid foundation while celebrating every milestone along the way.

Some people are drawn to flips and acrobatics, while others enjoy precise movements or fluid sequences. But just like you wouldn’t try an ollie before learning to balance on a skateboard, or attempt a back tuck before mastering a basic cartwheel, building a strong foundation is crucial to discovering your own style.

Our level band system at Swift gives students the tools to explore parkour at their own pace, starting with core skills that unlock countless possibilities. By focusing on safety, strength, and versatility right from the start, students build the confidence to try new moves and discover what excites them most—all while knowing they are prepared for the challenge.

That’s why our level band system prioritizes safety and strength, ensuring your child is ready to face greater challenges with confidence and care. Each level band serves as a safety validation, clearly demonstrating a student’s abilities and readiness for new obstacles. Each level unlocks new opportunities and grants access to specific areas of the gym, reinforcing their ability to handle obstacles safely. For instance, completing Level 2 allows them access to the striped red ledges—letting them take their skills to new heights, literally.

Celebrating Progress: Milestones Worth Cheering

The system also offers a tangible way to track progress and celebrate achievements. Every milestone—whether it’s earning a first band or conquering Level 3—is a marker of how far they’ve come and the lasting skills they’re developing. Reaching Level 3 even unlocks advanced open training sessions, giving them the chance to refine their abilities during open gym hours anytime we’re open. It’s not just about learning parkour—it’s about building a journey filled with milestones that you and your child can proudly celebrate together.

We love seeing our students share highlights about their level-ups, and we often include these in our newsletter and on social media to celebrate their progress.

Our level band system provides a clear path of progression, breaking down the sport into manageable steps and making it easier for students to know what comes next. By laying out a structured progression, students can focus on the core skills they need now, rather than feeling lost or jumping too far ahead.

This clarity isn’t just for students—it’s also for parents. The level band cards offer a straightforward way for parents to see what their child is excelling at and where they might need improvement. Whether it’s understanding that a child needs more work on balance or celebrating their new ability to land safely from height, parents gain valuable insight into their child’s progress and journey.

Grit and Practice: The Key to Leveling Up

Our level band system isn’t just about gaining new skills—it’s about developing grit through consistent practice and repetition. Leveling up often involves repeating movements until they become second nature and practicing skills just beyond the current comfort zone. This approach builds physical strength, mental toughness, and resilience, helping students face challenges head-on and persevere both in class and beyond the gym.

Shared Goals: Building Community and Collaboration

One of the most rewarding aspects of our level band system is the way it fosters a sense of teamwork and mentorship within classes. Working towards similar goals creates a shared purpose, encouraging students to cheer each other on, share tips, and celebrate one another’s successes. Younger or less experienced students naturally look up to peers who have already mastered the next level’s skills, building an environment of encouragement and inspiration.

At the same time, advanced students gain opportunities to mentor their classmates, reinforcing their own skills while helping others succeed. This dynamic strengthens parkour abilities and cultivates a community centered on collaboration, mutual respect, and shared growth—values that are at the heart of Swift Movement Studio. It’s more than just earning bands; it’s about moving forward, together.

Conclusion: Parents as Partners in the Journey

We encourage parents to actively support and cheer on their kids as they progress through our level band system. Setting clear goals helps students stay motivated and succeed in the long term, and having parental encouragement makes a big difference. By dedicating time to practice, attending open gyms, and celebrating milestones, students build not only physical skills but also confidence, resilience, and a passion for lifelong learning. Your support can make the journey even more rewarding—let’s create a strong foundation for future success together.

Ever feel like you’re missing something in life? Understanding Tony Robbins’ 6 Human Needs can provide the blueprint for a more fulfilling existence. As a professional parkour athlete with 13 years of experience, the owner of Swift Movement Studio, and someone who avidly pursues self-improvement, I’m going to share how parkour has changed my life by meeting the needs for Significance, Certainty, Variety, Growth, Connection, and Contribution.

These core needs guide our actions and decisions. Understanding them isn’t just enlightening; it’s crucial for building positive habits and avoiding pitfalls. For instance, if ‘Growth’ drives you, you might find fulfillment in learning new skills. Conversely, recognizing a need for ‘Significance’ can help you avoid seeking attention in unhealthy ways.

By the end of this, you’ll see how parkour can be a holistic approach to meeting these essential human needs. Let’s jump in.

Uncertainty/Variety

One of the most captivating aspects of parkour is its endless variety. Parkour is all about adapting to your environment, be it rocks, a playground, rooftops, universities, or a parkour gym like Swift Movement. On top of the environmental differences, athletes have developed countless styles to express themselves—some focus on being flippy and flowy, while others are all about physical and mental feats.

In my own years of training, I’ve faced several chronic injuries, from patellar tendonitis to a torn labrum. But the variety in parkour has always allowed me to adapt and continue training, finding new ways to engage with the discipline while respecting my body’s limits.

So, whether you’re navigating around injuries like I have, or simply looking for a new challenge, parkour’s variety has something for everyone. Curious?

Check out 10 styles of parkour incredible diversity of styles and environments in parkour.

Growth

If you ask me, the core of parkour isn’t just about the moves you can do; it’s about personal growth. It’s that feeling when you’re standing in front of a jump that seems impossible. Your heart’s pounding, and your mind is filled with doubts. But then, you start to break it down, piece by piece. You analyze the distance, the technique, and the landing. Slowly but surely, those mental and technical barriers start to crumble.

In my journey, I’ve come to realize that every challenge, no matter how daunting, can be broken down into manageable steps. Whether it’s a complex jump or a tricky vault, my approach is always the same: dissect the challenge. I might start by trying something similar but less intimidating, or I could break the move into its individual components and practice each one. I also draw on past experiences, reminding myself of previous obstacles I’ve overcome. This process has instilled in me a powerful belief: with the right amount of practice, belief, consistency, and patience, nearly everything is possible. It’s not just about doing the biggest jumps or tricks; it’s about proving to yourself what you are capable of.

Certainty: Knowing Your Limits and Pushing Them

Parkour isn’t just about taking risks; it’s about calculated risks. Through consistent training, you develop a deep sense of certainty about your current capabilities. This isn’t just physical; it’s a holistic mind-body connection that encompasses your technical skills, physical strength, and even your mental fears.

This certainty is empowering. You know exactly what you’re capable of, and that knowledge fuels your desire to push those boundaries even further. It’s not just about doing the jump; it’s about knowing you can.

“If you’re afraid to fall, you fall because you’re afraid. Everything is a choice.” – Daniel Ilabaca

Connection: More Than Just a Physical Journey

Before parkour, my athletic life was a solo endeavor, focused on long-distance running where I’d spend hours every weekend running until I got lost and then finding my way home. But parkour opened up a whole new world of connection for me. It’s not just about the physicality; it’s about the shared experiences. Whether we’re struggling to nail a new move, learning from each other, or experiencing that magical flow state, parkour creates a unique bond among its practitioners.

In parkour, movement becomes a language of its own, transcending cultural and linguistic barriers. I’ve done parkour with people around the world—from Europe, Asia, South America, Australia—and every single time we’re able to find a connection. Our shared experiences of growth and play create a unique bond, knowing that they likely went through a similar personal battle to unlock a specific jump or trick.

Check out our referral program or join our Discord community for local meetups and more!

Significance: Your Unique Style is Your Signature

Parkour isn’t a one-size-fits-all sport; it’s a canvas for individual expression. You don’t have to be a daredevil or an Olympian to find your place. In my years of training, I’ve seen the community grow and diversify, with athletes bringing their own unique styles and perspectives. Whether you’re into rooftop challenges, intricate flow combinations, incorporating dance elements, you’re in your 60s, or doing the newest off-axis flip, there’s a niche for you.

Every year, the game changes. New moves are invented, old ones are refined, and athletes from different backgrounds bring fresh perspectives. This constant evolution not only keeps the sport exciting but also opens up endless opportunities for individual significance. You can be the one who perfects a certain technique, pioneers a new style, or even just becomes the go-to person for training tips in your local community.

Your significance isn’t just defined by your athleticism; it can also be defined by your unique contributions to the community. Whether you’re the one sharing videos, hosting meetup sessions, or inviting folks for some Skyline Chili (for my Cincinnati friends) after a hard day’s training, your local impact is limitless. It’s about bringing something to the table that only you can, and in doing so, enriching the experience of the people around you.

Contribution: From Grassroots to Global Impact

Whether you’re coaching the next generation, organizing local events, or participating in Leave No Trace Jams (to help your local community and environment) or weekly meetups, your actions have a ripple effect that strengthens the local community and, by extension, the sport itself.

But don’t underestimate the global impact you can have. Parkour is still a young sport with less than 45 years of history, and its definition is still being written. Just in these past past couple years, here are some of the new things that have happened in the sport:

The first grassroots National Parkour Competition was hosted by USPK.

The first women-focused long-form parkour film debuted: Queen City.

I can’t even imagine trying to list the number of world’s first tricks or challenges that happened. But here are a few that are top of mind:

Kong Cork Zero from Pasha.

Roof gap flip to rail from Verky.

Elis Torhall and Kevin Franzen could have an entire category dedicated to them alone for firsts.

By sharing your unique techniques, participating in events, or even documenting what’s happening, you’re helping to shape the future of parkour on a global scale.

The Takeaway: Parkour as a Pathway to Fulfillment of Human Needs

As we’ve explored, parkour isn’t just a sport; it’s a lifestyle that can profoundly impact various aspects of your life. From finding your unique significance in a diverse community to pushing your boundaries for growth, parkour offers a holistic approach to fulfilling Tony Robbins’ 6 Human Needs—Certainty, Variety, Significance, Connection, Growth, and Contribution.

Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or someone looking to break free from the monotony of everyday life, parkour provides a platform for personal development and community involvement. It’s more than just flips and jumps; it’s a pathway to a more enriched, balanced, and fulfilling life.

So, are you ready to discover how parkour can be the missing piece to your life’s puzzle? Lace up those shoes, join the community, and let’s redefine what’s possible together.

Introduction

Much like how dance encompasses ballet, hip hop, zumba, and more, parkour styles also range and this blog post summarizes ten unique types of parkour from Jason Paul, each with its own philosophy, techniques, and goals. Whether you’re an aspiring parkour athlete or a seasoned practitioner, understanding these styles can enhance your training and appreciation for this dynamic sport.

1. Original Traceur

The foundation of all parkour styles, Original Traceurs focus on mastering fundamental moves. It’s about precision, consistency, and mental strength, emphasizing usefulness in emergency situations and embodying the original philosophy of becoming strong and capable.

2. Ascent/Descent

This style focuses on vertical movement, taking inspiration from rock climbing. It’s mentally challenging, requiring problem-solving to navigate up or down structures. While rare and physically demanding, it significantly impacts parkour by introducing unique moves.

3. Street Acro

Street Acro emphasizes performing the hardest tricks in urban settings. Unlike other styles, it starts with the trick and then finds the perfect setup. Practitioners often use gyms to refine their moves before taking them outdoors.

4. Hybrid

Combining elements of Original Traceurs and Street Acro, the Hybrid style, often referred to as freerunning, incorporates acrobatics into traditional parkour movements, creating unique and large-scale tricks.

5. Gizmo

Named for its focus on adapting to unique architectural features, Gizmo style involves creating movements tailored to specific structures, making it highly creative and diverse. Practitioners need a vast vocabulary of moves to effectively adapt their skills to any environment.

6. Art of Motion

Inspired by freestyle competitions like Red Bull’s Art of Motion, this style is characterized by densely packed tricks performed in quick succession, often in simple, low-resolution environments. It emphasizes high difficulty and aesthetic appeal.

7. Challenge

The Challenge style involves highly precise and difficult tasks, often focusing on awkward landings and narrow ledges. It’s less about looking impressive and more about the fun and creativity of overcoming tough challenges. This parkour style is highlighted by the SKILL competition format or the Parkour Takeover format.

8. Obstacle Dance

This style turns parkour into a form of dance, focusing on creating choreography with fluid and creative movements. It’s more about exploring new ways to move within a single environment rather than traveling from point A to B.

9. Fitness Parkour

Fitness Parkour uses parkour movements to build physical and mental strength. It’s accessible to all fitness levels and emphasizes the health benefits of parkour, such as improved coordination and confidence. We introduce these elements in our Swift Fit classes. Learn more

10. Off-Axis

Off-Axis explores unconventional flips and rotations inspired by skiing, snowboarding, and dance. This style focuses on surprise and delight, often making it seem like the athlete has lost control before seamlessly landing.

11+ Others

This list isn’t comprehensive as parkour styles are always evolving and developing. Even a few years ago several of these didn’t exist and there are likely new ones to continue to be crafted, maybe even by you! It doesn’t matter which style you like best, but get out, get moving, and try them all!

Conclusion

These ten styles showcase the versatility and creativity within the parkour community. Each style offers a unique approach to movement, allowing practitioners to find their own path and enjoy the art of motion in diverse ways. Whether you’re interested in mastering fundamentals or exploring creative choreography, there’s a style of parkour for everyone.
